It's really line of sight limited.



The primary benefit being it can see in weather conditions (or night) when visual detection would not be possible. It gets a few hundred yards farther than eyes because the radar is likely a couple meters above the watch crew. It also might get a return off a mast or something that might be missed visually in marginal conditions.
