So here it is - I escape, surface, etc, run towards Nazaire, and then I discover that you can move torps from a folded tube to a good one! This may hold only as long as the good one is a higher number (i.e., higher in the list on the torpedo screen) than the tube you're bringing it from. I just dragged the torp from tube 2 down into the reserves, and eventually the boys put her in Tube 1. AMazing! I'm not sure if it's realistic, but i'm sure happy to have those remaining fish!
As long as the outer doors are still intact and able to take the pressure without bursting it could be feasable to get the eels out of the tubes. Would probably involve cutting off parts of the tube in order to get the doors open, as plasma cutters weren't standard gear on a VIIC. Would be a ton of elbow grease and a lot of hack saw blades. Your whole forward torpedo room team is looking like there's gonna be a lot of IC1's on the chest's when you get back home.

your torpedo crew will mutiny after a while though...

"Nein, Nein, Nein, Jungs, der Zaunkonig soll doch im rohr 1 gesteckt werden, der Lut I in 2 und die andere mit dem TIIIs ja, hol die den wieder raus und versuchen sie es noch 'nen' mal!"

after doing that three times they'll be dead tired, but still awake enough to plot revenge

what bugs me most is not being able to get the aft externals forward on a type IX

Oh well, if I want all those little quirks and peculiarities of the basic boats to go away I'll take a XXI for a spin
:rotfl: the crew would be exhausted and probably insane after completing the job.

Even though they're historically correct and a fact of life, I HATE EXTERNAL TORPEDOS! They're a royal pain to move and you always need them in the worst places:

Sank the Hood inside Scapa and one of the DD's patroling the area. Though there was another DD patroling way south (15k+meters) figured it was safe to position my boat next to the Hood wreckage to surface, move the friggin external torpedo's and refresh the O2. With the noise the Hood is making figured that I wouldn't be able to be spotted by hydrophone and could easily submerge if the DD's starting coming my way.

Hiding behind a behemoth Troop Ship in Gale force weather went flawlessly (was in the south dock at Dover) to transfer the torpedos. Were still many juicy targets in the other dock.
