A quick update on the campaign against the Gauls.

238BC

The Spearheads' attack on the Gaul has suffered it's first major setback, putting the whole campaign to a halt. On the spring of 242BC, the Sextvs' Spearheads conquered the hilltop fortress of Gergovia, but were unable to continue the push as the army had lost roughly 25% of it's men, mostly cavalry.

When the summer came, Sextvs lead his cavalry out of Gergovia to south, to the coastal fortress of Massilia that had been conquered during the winter. From there, Sextvs and his men were transported by ships to Rome, to reinforce the cavalry and get few newly formed Polybian Cavalry legions.

This move left Captain Pavlvs in charge of defending Gergovia until Sextvs came back. The Gauls soon realised this and mounted attack after another to take the fortress back. Fortunately, the defences held and in late summer, Sextvs returned to defend the fort, but no further attacks were made by the Gauls.

As the summer came to an end and turned to fall, Sextvs split his troops, taking with him his cavalry and half of the infantry. The scouts had seen the Gaul leader roaming around nearby and the general wanted to act fast to get him. He did eventually find the leader, just north of Gergovia. The Gauls were taken by surprise and a fierce fight began. Sextvs did his usual trick and put his infantry to the open field to bait the enemy to attack them, while his cavalry sat silently in the woods waiting. And once again, the Gauls fell on to it, the battle was quickly over and the Gaullish leader layed dead on the battlefield.

On his return trip, a runner came to give him a message from Gergovia. The Gauls had attacked it with force and Captain Pavlvs needed help fast. On his way back south, Sextvs was ambushed by a ~2300 headed Gaul army. Luckily, the enemy had no cavalry and the most of the battlefield was covered with forest, allowing Sextvs to move unseen with his heavy cavalry, making hit and run attacks from behind the enemy while they were tied to the infantry. This proved to work perfectly, the enemy fell by dozens on each charge. Although he won the battle, he lost ~250 men from his 1100 men army.

On the next day he arrived to Gergovia, only to find it overrun and bodies of his Spearheads thrown down from over the walls. Outnumbered by nearly 900 men, Sextvs was confident that the lust for revenge would give his remaining troops the extra will and strength needed to take the city back. And so they prepared for what was to be the last attack for many of the soldiers in the Spearheads legion.
