I recommend upgrading to TMO for the 1.4 game. Two things will happen with the planes, 1 good and 1 bad:
GOOD: The number of air contacts will go WAYYYYYY down. The only planes that will show up in the game will be dedicated sub hunters, so unless you've been spotted and called in, you won't see them very often.
BAD: The evil, evil aircraft of TMO can see you under the water. They'll occasionally spot you 150-200 feet down and still bomb you at that depth. Be very very careful with aircraft in TMO.
