Default mobo help

The other half's PC seems not to remember the date and time anymore. When you boot it up you get a cmos checksum error. And upon inspection of the time and date in either the windows control panel or the bios settings they revert to jan 1994 or some such time.

My feeling is that this is a symptom of a mobo battery on the way out. Everything else seems to work correctly and I have had the bits of hardware in her pc for about 6 years now.
I've had a peep online and others seem to recommend a battery issue also.

What do you guys think, is my diagnosis correct? Hopefully the battery is not soldered in like some I have encountered so replacement should be a simple matter of getting another battery from somewhere like maplin electronics in town.
