So what have you found that works best when approaching or shadowing a target on the surface as far as visual range goes?

I read somewhere that a good rule of thumb is about 5000m max during the day and about 3000m max at night.

I'm sure it depends on conditions and you need to adjust those depending on the conditions and time frame(radar availibilty,experience, and such.
