Pardon my cynism but I can't help but think Iran persuaded al-Sadr to start the ruckus in the first place... I think Mahmoud is following the "Hugo Chavez school of Two Faced Diplomacy"... Hugo negotiated with FARC for hostage release while secretly offering them $300M, Mahmoud stirs things up in Basra using al-Sadr and then looks like the "good guy" for putting a stop to it...
Can't prove a word of it, but it makes for a nice conspiracy...
