I have heard it on several occasions. The sounds I noted were the bulkheads creaking and then poping and I have heard the impact sound on the seabed. I was abot 3000-5000 yds when I heard them. Really creapy sounding.

I had wounded two freighters a small and a medium sized one. I waited around for the escorts to leave then finished them off with the deck gun. Right after they started sinking my sound man notified me of approaching warships so I dived and was manually opperating the hydrophones and like you guys have mentioned I saw the green light indicating something so I turned up the volume and thats when i heard it. Oh, I was also using headphones and had the music volume turned to 0. Other times Ive turned it up and not heard it at all. The above incident occured in the South China Sea early 42. Note I am running stock SHIV no mods.

Im pretty sure it has to do with range and conditions of the water. If you are in deep water and at short range the vessle may fall outside the arc of detection pretty quickly before it gets to a depth where the bulkheads start to go and depending on the depth to the seabed it may take a while before it gets there and you can hear the impact. Remember the hydrophones are not omni-directional, wouldnt be much good if they were.
