I had trouble with Greece and Macedonia for some time, before I got the idea to 'buy' them!
I'm parked in Sparta at this very moment and its mine!
Diplomat's can replace a sword arm occasionally!
I have much money though, so this may not have been possible in your case. I have at least 150K gold at the moment.
