Question: What is the difference between the A-scope and the PPI?
The A-scope is an oscilloscope display. Basically you turn a wheel, and when the radar head gets a return the scope shows a spike that indicates the range to target. The bearing is read from the wheel showing where the head was when the return came back.

PPI stands for Plan Position Indicator (if I remember correctly, anyway). This is the familiar radar display. It shows a top-down view with the transmitter in the center. You'll see the line of current bearing on the display, sweeping around, and any returns show up as dots on the screen. Distance between you and the dots is representative of the distance between your boat and the contact.
Thanks Quillan, just what I wanted to know.
