-Targeting

how do I specify manual or auto, is it just the weapons officer/choose nearest ship/etc kinda thing? cause whne I use manual, and even lock on, some torps miss,,even wehn AOB is good,,why? initially anyways....I would prefer the game dose all that, and I shoot, how do I do this
Hi! and Welcome to Subsim!

You enable manual or autotargeting when you load the mission or campaign.

**Please note the following examples are from the "Grey Wolves Expansion" (GWX) add-on, which changes some of the appearance but not the underlying function of these screens.

First, select "Change Realism" when you select your Single Mission or are about to begin your campaign.

When you have the options selection screen, make sure the "Manual Targeting System" and "No Weapons Officer Assistance" boxes are not selected.

These will allow the game to do all the targeting work for you - just lock on your target and order the torpedoes to be launched. Please bear in mind, though, that even computer-controlled aiming is not foolproof, so there are some things you can to do help yourself:
  1. Try to launch torpedoes when the Gyroangle (as shown in the periscope and UZO displays) is near 000 (say, from 350 to 010)
  2. If you shoot torpedo salvos, keep the salvos very narrow (maybe 2-3 degrees at most).
  3. Remain undetected. Ships or convoys that detect you will accelerate to maximum speed and begin zig-zagging radically, which will disrupt your targeting solutions and will likely result in torpedoes missing their target.
There are a lot of other things, but that will do for starters.

-single mission 2

after finally winning the 1st,,took a while,,lol,,,I cant use periscope in the high waves,,so do I assume this is a deck gun only mission? ??
Which is "Single Mission 2"? Are you referring to the second Naval Academy missions, which is "Naval Artillery"? If so, then it is a deck gun mission only.

-night missions or ports?

when do I see any of these cool things? havent yet...
When you are in a campaign, your missions will sometimes begin in daylight and sometimes at night. It seems to be fairly random as far as I can tell.

-ramming

seems I get rammed alot,,,does happen to you guys,,,,? I get up, can aim a few and let em go, but then I get rammed before a crash dive,,,,maaan I sukk,,,,hahahahaha

??
You may want to try attacking from further away and from outside the ships' paths, and to keep aware of ships other than your target: an escort may have spotted you while you were drooling over your target, and be coming back to clobber you.

-SH4

anyone tell me if SH4 is better or worse than SH3...and some reasons why? thinking of getting???
It is certainly different, but whether it is "better" or "worse" seems a matter of opinion and personal taste. There are mods for each game that, I think most people agree, have done a lot to improve each of the original products, so your best bet is probably to go to the SubSim mod forums for each game to see what mods are out there and how they have changed each game.

-links for newbies?

finally found a link for the comm manual(and still dont understand how to manual or auto aim,,,but looking for other info links please?
For good historical information on U-boats I would start at http://www.uboat.net

For manual targeting I would first check out Paul "Wazoo" Wasserman's Manual Plotting and Targeting Tutorial, here.

There is also a thread for new players here.

more missions for SH3

are there any addon packs for new missions(will learn editor soon) and if so, where do I find

thnx in advance sooo much

Subsim has a Mission Designer's Forum, here.

The GWX "supermod" has a number of new missions, both historical and hypothetical, which can be downloaded as part of GWX from the GWX home page

Hope this helps!
