This is one of my many pet peeves against the government. It really drives me batty that the government (literally) profits when its citizens break the law. In no other area of society would this be tolerated. Can you imagine if your boss decided that, in lieu of a formal reprimand for being late to work, the company charged you money and then kept it? Everyone would complain that it's unjust and potentially corrupt. Yet we except it with the government.

Look at all the major sporting associations. If any of them fine a player/coach/team, that money goes directly to a charity, just so there's no question that the league is doing it to line its own pockets.

I'll say it again: It's a travesty when the government profits from a citizen breaking the law.
