I've been researching ships for a project of mine, and you would be surprised: the 2000-ton tramp steamer was one of the largest ships to ply the North Sea. I've found hundreds of coastal vessels in the lists, many of them as small as 300 tons! And until the fall of Dunkirk most of them were involved in cross-Channel convoys.
