I've reloaded the game to before I left base and i'm going to replace him. I recieved no casualty reports during my first patrol, so if he IS dead, i can't imagine how it happend. :S

Was his face pink before you left? Thats odd if so.
You can try dragging him to the damage control team to see if his health improves.
Honestly I've always thought that this was a weak area in the game play, you never lose a couple of crew members, either we all die or all return. One would think if you got caught by a plane, at least the gunners or watchmen might get it.
