Knowing this information will help you to find the big targets, since mods like RSRDC place them strategically based on current operations/timeline. Borneo is a great place to find captial ships in ealry '42, but eventually you'll only see lone tankers and merchants.
Ports like Truk and Rabaul are always good places to hunt around for task forces or lone warships.
