try running SPEEDFAN in the background and then shell out when it acts up and check system-wide temperatures. this sounds like a textbook overheat.

if it is heat:

1. ram heatspreaders need to be replaced (they're not making enough contact)
2. harddrives need their own fan(s)
3. GPU heatsink/fan might need to be replaced or simply reset with new artic silver grease.
4. ditto CPU
5. your northbridge/southbridge fan is failing... replace it with a 3rd party chipset cooler.
