Depends on the program you are using, but you can resize it to make it smaller, maybe 500 pixels, just look for a resize image in one of the menus. Then save as a .JPG it will compress it, you lose a little bit of quality but on a monitor you won't even notice the difference.

If you happen to be using Photoshop Elements, there is a menu for "Save for the Web" and the compression is great. If you give info on the program you are using I am sure we can give you some pointers.
