The funny thing is that when the Bismarck made her famous and final sortie in the Atlantic in 1941, she did so without the big swastika marking on her foredeck. It was painted over in Bergen, Norway. (You don't wanna make ship identification too easy for the enemy)

The pictures Bob Ballard took of the Bismarck on the bottom did show a ghostly swastika on the foredeck, but that's because the seawater slowly ate away at the overlying paint over the decades.
