I don't imagine I'll ever find the documentary evidence but I read an obit. in the telegraph of an MTB captain who pioneered the use of depth charges against merchant ships (by running alongside at high speed and rolling them off set to min depth).
As i said I'll try and find the cutting but I don't have much hope won't be 'till Saturday afternoon as I'm at work now and Friday night won't be spent searching out paper cuttings!

EDIT my point being that some motor boats did have depth charges as for the other gear I don't know but I have seen pics of early portable hydrophones.
