Yes it did - after another torpedo.
The first one didn't seem to have any effect, so SH definitely treated it like a miss. All I can figure is the dice said Premature just as it passed under the ship so even though it was a miss it still looked good, or even though it was good it was still a miss, or something. Merchant didn't seem to notice since he just kept his course and speed. You'd think that big bang and all of the water blowing up in the air around his ship would have made him think something was going on.
