I'm not sure
why you'd want to remain on the watch tower longer.
One of the first things done during a normal dive was to clear the bridge and secure the hatch. After that the actual dive was started. A crash dive actually had the dive procedures started as the watch crew (or, Heaven forfend, gunnery crews or mainenance personnel) started heading inside. A risky procedure but, then again, you didn't just do a crash dive as a lark; there was a
reason to get deep fast, after all.
