This depends on how drastic your course change was. With you being new to the sim, might I suggest anything between 45° and 90° turns. You'll have no trouble seeing the difference between the mirrored contact and true contact. The true contact will stay on the same course, while the mirrored contact will "jump" the direction of your turn in the ITA screen which is usually in the middle screen.

The best way to practice is to create a simple mission with a civilian ship that makes a ton of noise and have your towed array deployed at mission start. On that note, whenever I deploy my array, I have the indicator at ship control stop at the "s". This helps in that you can have a TMA faster than if it was fully deployed.
