Graf Paper got the best tips. But have to add cause i had a similar problem to yours i threw out the sound card and enabled the onboard sound then the choppiness/static stopped. Are you using onboard sound or a PCI sound card? if PCI then disable it and as long as your mobo has onboard sound enable that.
