In the first year of the war, the ratio was 40%/60% of days at sea to days at port. Later it improved to 50/50.
At first it took 2.35 uboats to make sure you had one at sea.
After the fall of France, and the seizure of their dock facilities, it only took 1.84 uboats to make sure you hand one at sea.
