I found the same five 'Destroyers', early October '39' around AN5633.

I detected 'fast warships' on sonar, decided to intercept their bearing/course (thinking they might be escorting a Battle Cruiser or some Capital vessels.
I had to surface at full speed and occasionally diving to get a sonar fix to get into a decent position, cause of the 'fog/rain' conditions I only got a visual at 3000m

dived to PD and watched the said destroyers (four V&W and I think one Tribal Class ??) steam by but no fat cruisers

Headed for the Firth of Forth instead...
