I imagine that sailors of the time period would have liked to have had bearing in their binoculars also; but, as many of you know they didn't. They used the 32 point system, i.e., NW by W = 27 points = 303* 45' 00" etc.
For immersion sake, glance at the compass repeater in the center of the turm to get your bearings.
