I am currently in AN01'85, N'W of Edinburgh, been on station for 36 hours and still have about 60% of my fuel left. I did leave from Wilhelmshaven having refueled there before this second patrol.
Going through the Kiel canal usualy at a speed of 6'Kts would usually take up around 11% of my fuel (3 notches on the guage) anyhow.
Its one of the things I like about the Type II is that you have to constantly monitor your fuel just like a commander would have done.
Another thing is if you get a contact report or hear a contact on hydrophones you have to think very carfully before going off at flank speed to intercept. Fuel is precious!
I find a speed of, as Penelope Grey says, 6'Kts to give best fuel economy vs, speed or alternativly 5'Kts or even 4'Kts once you are off the coast of Britain.
I reacon I will only be able to remain on station for two or three days at best but since I have sank one ship already therefore im sure I will get another in the bag before returning! Thats if I dont get jumped by the Royal Navy... the weather is poor, visibility poor, and the Firth of Forth is a dangerous place...! I narrowly escaped a Vosper last night! :p
