Stock distance for submergence
In daytime I submerge before the enemy gets to five miles away. At night I use three miles for safety, but I'll run decks awash (30' in the Gato and Balao) up to 3000 yards. These are generally conservative enough that you can be pretty sure you weren't spotted.
