That's really odd. I just ran a career two weeks ago with an IXB, late '44. I developed a reasonably-survivable way out of Biskay ::grins:: by running submerged the entire time at 2kts. Mid-day I'd pop the snorkel up only long enough to replenish my air supply, and in the mid of night I'd raise it to recharge my batteries and refresh my air again. So I'm not sure why you're having trouble getting your air to refresh with the snorkel up. Sorry.
