The 'Christmas Tree' is a dashboard of Red/Green light indicators which show the status of tubes doors etc.
So that when your diving, you know you have no holes in the boat.
Of course, the US fleet boats had them, not sure about the U-Boats.
Also, if the OP actually means a real Christmas Tree
