Actually no, it does work. The thing is we're not creating any new "nodes", but utilizing an existing node that currently is only active or "filled" at battlestations. I added 3 new crewmen to the command room section (upping the total from 12 to 15) and assigned them to that existing navigation station node during the normal 1st, 2nd and 3rd watch.
Try it. My example is for the Gato, although it may work with no, or perhaps just minor editing for the Balao and maybe some of the other fleet boats. But in any case you can see what I did and apply the same technique to any of the boats.
