Normally charging is shut off when 100% is reached, but if the batteries are damaged they will never reach 100%, and thus charging goes on and on... and your fuel consumption is huge. That's why you need to turn it off manually whenever it doesn't charge anymore(it usually stops around 95-98%). Limping back at two knots, which somebody suggested, won't take your far btw. The most efficient cruising speed in SH4 fleet boats is around 9.5 knots(Gato at least). If you are charging, then going ahead 1/3 will fill them batteries up quite fast.
