I eventually did abandon the patrol area and headed south to Surabaya. Almost there and still no shipping activity sighted. It seemed almost like a glitch had occured and stalled the spawning process...
Annoying thing is I've still got a full complement of torpedoes (I sank the merchant with gunfire) and I'd be embarrassed to arrive home with full tubes...
