I looked up where I read the story. The Uboat this happened to was U-35 under the command of Arnauld de la Periere. One of the guys on watch was Prince Sigismund who just happened to be the Kaiser's nephew.
Aparently, the thing jumped from the water, and hit the deck totally on it's side so the warhead part didn't impact. The thing kept going forward and just slid off the other side and kept going.
I think that was the luckiest day that U-35 had ever had. :rotfl:
This may have been the first real world manifestation of "Bernard" in some way.
