Well, you can't blame them for not wanting to sink, LOL.
Sounds to me like their damage control team tried like hell to save her.
I've had similar experiences in-game, where a second torp was needed, in bad weather etc, when the first torp failed to do enough damage to sink a ship outright.
You can imagine the chaos aboard ship as they rush to try and stop the flooding.
