Diving rate is much the same for you hit "5" then "D" immediately you are doing the same as hitting "C". Where you stop is up to you.
Sailor Steve is entirely correct in relation to how a crash dive operated, so the technique I described is not necessarily realistic in relation to a crash dive but gives greater control in game in shallow water without the problem of hitting the bottom. It also helps when you get some early warning gear later in the war and you have a much better chance of getting your boat underwater before the threat is on top of you.
