Not to nit-pick, but you do know Fairbanks Morse Opposed Piston engines
don't have valves right? They just have ports that open when the piston moves back far enough to expose them. The lack of a valvetrain (coupled with forced induction) is what makes these 2-strokes so efficient.
As for the clattering sound, I'm not sure what actually causes it...
