More reason to build your own OS on the box. You can get at the base system using something like netcat, reprogram it to boot a linux bootloader like Grub, and then install Gentoo (Gentoo is desirable since you compile all components from the ground up - the makes it optimized for the platform it is on) or some other OS on it. You can then log into the box using telnet or ssh using a program like Putty. Works good. I have a 500 GB mini system online like this.
