The Type II is very fun to patrol with, esp in the Black Sea. The challenge of this boat is the limited torpedo loadout. You have to make every one count to have a successful patrol. This boat is the 'Hit and Run' boat of the Kriegsmarine.
The Type 9 D2 (my fav ) is a huge challenge if you use it to patrol and attack convoys. It is easily detectable surfaced & submerged, however it's loadout is easily enough to destroy entire convoys. Do not be led into thinking the game is unplayable if using a D2, in fact I can usually finish the war in a D2 (about 75% of the time), it's not easy but is very doable. The dive time sucks on this boat but you get enough warning to crash dive (some of the time). Fully kitted out, this boat is a match for anything in the air. The main reason I favour this boat is because it has enough diversity to enable me to conduct a long or short patrol. Long being US coast picking off single merchant or short being UK coast hunting convoys.
