I find the type II a good boat to start the war with. I imagine just before the war began I was given my first command and with the latest boats in short supply a type II was provided.

The type II can really give a great start to your game. Because of its limited range you have to think very carefully before using a load of fuel to look for a reported contact, you have to think twice and sometimes the contact is just too far. Also because of its limited armament it means you often land up with realistic tonnage figures. The biggest downside is that it has no rear facing torpedo tube! But that can be challenging.

The type II is also great in the shallow waters off the east coast and its agility is very good.

So for me I always start the war with a type II.
