This afternoon I ran into the Nelson and sank her
I had already been on patrol, sinking 28,000t and had 6 torpedoes left. So I thought I'd hang around off the N.W. tip of Ireland for a few days.
Got a radio contact for a convoy to the north, so I got in it's path in plenty time, across its bows. Periscope up, a little look - front row of the convoy comes into sight, nicely in line. So I'm thinking, that's odd, where's the destroyers? Second line comes into view in line behind the first with a warship in it; again I'm thinking that's odd a destroyer being in there (bear in mind I've only been playing SH3 for 2 or 3 weeks LOL). Click on it on the map and lo and behold it's the Nelson! I was GOBSMACKED!
After I'd got over the shock/excitement I didn't have much work to do. The way I'd positioned myself, she was going to sail across my bow on a perpindicular course, at about 500 metres! Happy days. Not only that - when I had initially seen the hydrophone contacts I'd stopped my boat half way between the warship and a madium tanker; so I could have an aft shot at that too.
Everything went to plan - a torpedo in Nelsons magazine and one in her fuel bunker, she went down in minutes. I actually couldn't believe how easily she went down. After I'd confirmed there were no other warships I surfaced to create havoc with the deck gun.
So I'd sunk 2 with torps and went on to sink another 5 with the deck gun before breaking off to chase a couple of large ones that had broken away. I had 2 torpedoes remaining. I had hoped to sink the large merchant with 1 and the large cargo with the other (I was out of gun ammo) but in the end I'd to use the last torp to finish off the large merchant.
So in all I sank 8 ships from the convoy of 13 (I ignored the other 4 small merchants/freighters) for a total of 103,725t. And with the tonnage of the other 4 ships before that, I came home with 12 kills (pretty good for a VIIb, I think) for 132,026t.
I know I'm playing on only 41% realism (I have been increasing it slightly and gradually) but I'm well pleased with myself! Especially as that was only my second convoy encounter. I've read of people on here who have played for quite some time and not seen a capital ship at all. So to see one after 2 or 3 weeks gaming I'm really surprised and pleased.
P.S. I have a few screenies just in case anyone wants to see them.
