OK, I think I figured it out.

with a 6 speaker, 5.1 system, turning on "matrix" makes the difference.

also, if you are making movies with fraps, in control panel/sounds/speakers set it to 2 channel instead of 5.1 (records much better....no missing audio)

sounds much better
