I agree with tater: either the our subs are way too beefy, or enemy deck guns way too weak. I just did the single mission where USS Skipjack has been cornered in shallow waters and tries to make it to the deeper waters of the Bohol sea. Just to test the damage modelling, I took a Gato and went flank speed towards the nearest gunboat. He managed to dodge my ramming effort while scoring about ten hits with his gun, until my own gunners weren't obscured by the tower anymore and sank the gunboat with about five shots. Several more gunboats appeared, and even though I never managed to ram them, my deck gun crew eventually took care of them. In the end I reached the deeper waters after sinking six gunboats and one subchaser, while taking over 30 hits from enemy deck guns(!), not to mention smaller calibre machine guns. Although my hull looked like swiss cheese, no systems were broken in the end, and my sub was able to submerge to periscope depth just fine. The mission ended right there, so I wasn't able to test how deep she could go.
