There is one other thing you need to remember: the world in Silent Hunter III is bigger (in terms of distances between locations) by at least 10% than it is in real life. I believe this results from two things: 1) the standardized "1 degree latitude or longitude = 120 km" is used in Silent Hunter III where in the real world a degree of latitude is about 110 km, with significant variations for longitude as you approach the poles.
2) The distance between any two locations in Silent Hunter III is usually greater than you would find in the real world since the Silent Hunter III map is a Mercator projection where distance = sqrt ( (difference in latitude)^2 + (difference in longitude)^2 ) but the real world is an oblate spheroid where ships normally travel the shortest distance along the great circle.
