OK thanks guys. Between posting and now I noticed it slowed to 2 when the contact was within a certain distance, maybe up to about 30 km.

I was hoping to find a mod to get a radio message with those.

What I HAVE done is used Commander to change the tc to be slowed to 1 with those and set the sound effects to only operate at 1 as well. So hopefully when they appear the effects will come on with the tc slowing, to get my attention if I'm reading or whatever.

I don't know if things would change in a IX boat but I'm presently in a VII so I suppose those further away contacts don't matter much just now.
