I'm not sure the UK can afford to cancel trade with every nation that has such
barbaric laws.
I don't think the EU could impose trade restrictions, but if it could then that would be
much more effective.
That said, we certainly should have better
conditional trade
agreements with them.
Trade agreements are more lasting and effective at changing policy abroad. The
changing of Turkish law to fit in to the EU's membership criteria and the
commonwealth criteria are good, obvious examples. However, there are countless one-to-one
examples with other countries.
Of course, it wouldn't be easy with politically isolated countries like the Sudan. Total
cessation of trade and diplomatic relations will only make it more politically isolated.
It might help, but it's a poor long term strategy.
