Actually most of the damage in that picture was inflicted by deck gunfire from fellow US subs. The
Darter ran aground on a reef chasing Kurita's battlefleet during the battle of Leyte Gulf.
Dace took her crew off and tried to destroy her with torpedoes and gunfire. Later the
Nautilus came up with her six-inch guns and gave it a try. The wrecked hull was still sitting on the reef as late as 1962.
