"...do you think that in RL the Skipper's number 1 wouldn't inform him that the crew had been standing at battle stations for a extreme amount of time?..."
In real life it wouldn't happen. The captain would be so involved with his crew, nothing happened he wouldn't know about (although some responsibility would be on others to see it was taken care of.) A commander who neglected his crew would be out of a job or dead. Once each of us has discovered this "gotchya" it's unlikely to happen again just like leaving port without torps, running the battery dry, submerging with too much damage, neglecting to activate (or even have assigned) DC crew, gun battles with 10 surface ships, leaving Silent Running activated during attacks (for a few of the other gotchyas.)
The idea the game has to be made absolutely fool proof leaving nothing for the player to do is not what the game was designed for. Crew management was introduced in SH3 as a result of sub simmers hinting, no suggesting.. no, that's not it, asking... no, demanding... no that's not it... SCREEMING-PLEADING-STOMPING-ON-THE GROUND for immersive crew management. Well, we've got it. And what is the cry for now? Make it more automatic. The exec has to ASK us to do our job by reminding us the ENTIRE crew has been at their station for 20 hours. After all, the captian is there just for looks right? Satisfaction in playing the SH series is you get rewarded for attention to details. You do everything right, THEN you get to sink the enemy and get away clean. This is such an EASY problem to avoid:
Disengage TC
Set up your attack
Get into position
Set Battle Stations
Attack
Turn off Battle Stations
Slink away
Engage TC (did you tour the boat before you went into brain dead mode?)
