Don't forget that you can hit the numpad-delete key to remove the HUD - that will eliminate the glow/brightness from those interface elements that DeepSix mentioned that can spoil your night vision. Then you can just hit it again to bring the HUD back once you've seen what you need to see.
Of course, playing in a darkened room and replacing your light bulbs with red ones will also help preserve your night vision
