Well imagine a silent hunter game that ends in 1944...

Thats pretty much the same as what many games these days do, the just end without conclusion. I havent looked at sales figures but I guess it sells the sequels.
Back in the day, you`d buy a sequel for the simple fact that the first game was good. Like the total war series (although i feel medieval2 tw was a step backwards, and the upcoming title is in a boring era).
